Heritage tourism programs are often initiated and led by community-based organizations, government agencies, or local businesses. Their goal is to preserve a neighborhood’s cultural identity by amplifying its history and creating more customers for local businesses. Heritage tourism offers visitors an opportunity to experience local culture at historic or cultural sites or through activities. Community-based heritage tourism can be sustainably developed, benefitting instead of displacing small businesses and residents.
