SBAN hosts conferences, workshops, and seminars. In 2022, our national conference will bring together small business leaders from across our network to identify the challenges facing small businesses in gentrifying neighborhoods, share knowledge about innovative policy and practice, and identify ways to push new policy in different regions. Multiple regional conferences are planned for the year following. Stay tuned for information about these and other upcoming virtual and in-person events.

SBAN’s 2023 conference at The Hotel at the University of Maryland will feature speakers from across the country and abroad, as well as workshops and informal networking. This year’s theme, “Strengthening Community& Building Opportunity,” highlights how promoting community control, ownership, and identity are central to creating opportunities for small business growth and sustainability in BIPOC and immigrant communities.

Conference sessions will highlight a range of tools and strategies to combat small business displacement and strengthen the social and economic fabric of neighborhoods, such as access to capital, community ownership, tenant organizing, and post-pandemic recovery. Small business leaders, scholars, policymakers, and community advocates will talk about the latest commercial gentrification research and how they are supporting BIPOC- and immigrant-owned small businesses through on-the-ground efforts.
