About
Community land trusts (CLTs) are nonprofit organizations that steward communally owned land. CLTs acquire land and maintain long-term ownership. CLTs have historically been used to promote housing affordability by retaining ownership of land and selling housing built on that land at below-market prices, typically with a 99-year ground lease. However, CLTs can also be used to support small businesses. In neighborhoods experiencing gentrification, commercial CLTs can ensure more affordable rents, support BIPOC and immigrant business owners through technical and counseling assistance, and preserve neighborhood businesses that reflect the cultural character of a community.
