SBAN in CityLab: “To Narrow the Racial Wealth Gap, Help Entrepreneurs of Color Own Property”

Published On: April 29th, 2022|

SBAN Director Willow Lung-Amam and Researcher Nohely Alvarez wrote an article for Bloomberg CityLab that calls on the Biden administration and state and local governments to do more to help people of color become commercial property owners. “Homes are not the only kinds of property that have been affected by discriminatory government and private policies,” they write. “Commercial property ownership has been hampered, too. And helping small businesses owned by people of color purchase property rather than rent is an overlooked way to help businesses thrive and address the [racial wealth] gap.” The article highlights community land trusts and cooperatives as strategies for keeping small businesses in place.
