SBAN’s Knaap and Somashekhar featured in Washington Post Story on Light Rail Gentrification Concerns

SBAN’s Gerrit Knaap, who is director of the National Center for Smart Growth, and SBAN member Sheila Somashekhar, who is director of the Purple Line Corridor Coalition (PLCC), talked with The Washington Post about concerns that Maryland’s new light rail will bring gentrification and rising rents to the D.C. suburbs, pricing out existing residents and small businesses, especially those that are immigrant-owned. The PLCC is trying to keep small businesses in place during lengthy construction disruptions, and after the Purple Line is running.
